JAZZIZ One Nite Stand at Boca Resort featuring Urbanity.

Albare will be touring the U.S. in June as Urbanity, a collaboration with keyboardist Phil Turcio, in support of their new collection of music Urban Soul, out on March 31, Urbanity has also evolved over the years. “When it first started,” he explains, “Urbanity was very much my Australian project. Now, it has become a combination between Australia and the United States. You have Pablo Bencid on drums and Ricardo Rodriguez on bass and both are based in New York City. Then, you have me and my compare Phil Turcio, whom I’ve been playing with on and off for twelve years, so we know each other very well. We’re both based in Australia. The touring band will have fellow Australians Gerry Pantazis on drums and Peter Mollica on bass”

Urbanity therefore represents the melting-pot of international cultures and influences that is synonymous with jazz music in general. Albare has also observed this fusion of cultures in the music of other musicians who have performed at his own jazz club, Bird’s Basement, which was opened on March 2016 in conjunction with Gianni Valenti, owner of New York City’s Birdland club. “One of the guys playing here was Axel Tosca, who’s one of the guys I play with in New York. Axel is a great piano player. Some of the stuff that they were doing was like techno with a Latin feel, which I’ve never heard before. It was so fresh. So, there’s all those cultures and various influences from the young people coming through. It’s a wonderful exchange.”
