Saxophonist Joe Lovano will perform a tribute concert to the late composer and educator Gunther Schuller. The concert, presented by the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota (CMSM) will take place in Sundin Hall on the Hamline University campus in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 5 at 4 p.m.
An NEA Jazz Master and French horn prodigy, Gunther Schuller was also a conductor and educator. He was known for bringing the world of classical music and jazz together and for establishing the first jazz program at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Joining Joe Lovano for this concert will be CMSM director and violinist Young-Nam Kim, pianist Timothy Lovelace, bassist Anthony Cox, drummer Fred Harris and guest composer Peter Child. The ensemble will perform works written for and inspired by Schuller, including "Moon Sculptures," a song written by Peter Child expressely for Lovano and Kim. Lovano will then conclude the evening with selections from his Grammy-nominated album Rush Hour.
