Bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding has won the MOBO (Music of Black Origins) Award in the Best Jazz category. Spalding beat out competition from fellow nominees Bill Lawrence, Cory Henry, Jacob Collier and Michael Janisch.
Spalding was honored during the 21st MOBO Awards ceremony, which took place at in Glasgow, Scotland on November 4. The ceremony did not go by flawlessly; at one point during the night, The Londoners were wrongly handed the Best Song award before organizers revealed that the prize should have gone to MC Abra Cadabra, later blaming a “production error.”
For 21 years, the MOBO Awards have recognized the outstanding achievements of artists who perform music in genres ranging from Gospel, Jazz and RnB, Reggae and Hip Hop. Other winners of this year’s edition include Craig David for Best Male Act and Lady Leshurr for Best Female Act.
