The Adrienne Arsht Center for the performing Arts of Miami-Dade County has announced the six-concert lineup for the Jazz Roots 2016-2017 season, and the appointment of the University of Miami's Frost School of Music’s Shelly Berg as artistic advisor for the series.
The ninth edition of Jazz Roots will open on November 4 with a tribute to series co-founder Larry Rosen, who passed away in October 2015. Musician, composer and producer Dave Grusin—Rosen’s longtime collaborator and, with Rosen, a co-founder of GRP Records — will be joined by the Frost School of Music's Henry Mancini Orchestra and other guests to celebrate Rosen's career.
On November 26, saxophonist Dave Koz, along with Jonathan Butler, Kenny Lattimore and Valerie Simpson, will perform a Christmas-themed concert. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis, will perform a repertoire of music exploring the full jazz spectrum, from its New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz, on January 20. Pianists Chick Corea and Gonzalo Rubalcaba will join forces for a set of solos and duets on February 24. On March 17, the Brandford Marsalis Quartet will play a show with guest vocalist Kurt Elling. The season will conclude on April 7, with guitarist Steve Miller's blues revue, featuring such guests as guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and pianist Shelly Berg.
