The Herb Alpert Foundation pledged a $10.1 million grant to Los Angeles City College (LACC) in California.
The money will create an endowment to give music free tuition to majors studying at the Los Angeles City College, starting in the fall of 2017. This donation will also enable LACC to increase the number of music majors each year from 175 to 250.
"The biggest motivation was helping the kids who don't have the financial energy to go to a major college," the trumpeter said in a statement. "At LACC, they've nurture thousands of dedicated students every year. I've visited the school. It's alive. It's kicking."
Alpert's donation is the largest gift to an individual community college in the history of Southern California and the second-largest gift of its kind in the history of the state.
