The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO), directed by saxophonist Tommy Smith, will join forces with Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen to pay tribute to bassist and composer Charles Mingus in a concert titled "The Jazz Legacy of Charles Mingus," which will take place at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on September 23.
According to a statement on their official website, the SNJO and Andersen aim to "explore the multi-chambered music of Charles Mingus with improvisational inventiveness, artistry and imagination."
In addition, the SNJO will pay tribute to saxophonist Charlie Parker with a series of concerts that will take place in a number of Scottish cities from November 11-13. These concerts will feature new arrangements of Parker's music, commissioned and performed by the SNJO.
