Scottish National Jazz Orchestra to pay tribute to Mingus and Bird

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO), directed by saxophonist Tommy Smith, will join forces with Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen to pay tribute to bassist and composer Charles Mingus in a concert titled “The Jazz Legacy of Charles Mingus,” which will take place at Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on September 23.

According to a statement on their official website, the SNJO and Andersen aim to “explore the multi-chambered music of Charles Mingus with improvisational inventiveness, artistry and imagination.”

In addition, the SNJO will pay tribute to saxophonist Charlie Parker with a series of concerts that will take place in a number of Scottish cities from November 11-13. These concerts will feature new arrangements of Parker’s music, commissioned and performed by the SNJO.
