Catherine Russell to release album celebrating the golden age of Harlem jazz

Vocalist Catherine Russell will release Harlem on My Mind on Jazz Village Records on September 9.

Russell’s tribute to the golden age of Harlem jazz, features 12 new versions of Great American Songbook standards composed by such songwriters as Benny Carter, Irving Berlin and Fats Waller.

Harlem on My Mind features saxophonist and composer Andy Farber, who contributed five arrangements to the project. Other musicians include trumpeter Alphonso Horne, pianist Mark Shane and bassist Tal Ronen. Harlem Blues and Jazz Band saxophonist Fred Staton, 100-years-old at the time of recording, is a guest on the track “Don’t Take Your Love From Me.”

Russell has also embarked on a world tour to support the release of the album. The tour will include stops at the Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans on August 6 and The Bogota Jazz Festival at Teatro Libre in Bogota, Colombia on September 16.
