Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Series: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5 will be released on Columbia/Legacy Recordings on October 21.
The three-CD box set will be the fifth volume in the label’s series detailing the many phases of Miles Davis’s career. It will focus on the period of time between 1966 and 1968, in which the trumpeter worked primarily with his great second quintet, which featured pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams and saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
Freedom Jazz Dance‘s release will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1966 recording of Davis’ album Miles Smiles, which was released the following year. The box set will include full session reels from Davis’ Miles Smiles sessions, alongside master takes from Nefertiti (1968) and Water Babies (released in 1976 but recorded in 1967).
