Pat Metheny, Live From Japan

On March 12, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release We Live Here – Live in Japan, a DVD from the Pat Metheny Group. Featuring the classic trio of Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays and bassist Steve Rodby, this title is being reissued after being unavailable for many years.

The Pat Metheny Group reconvened in 1995 to release the album We Live Here, six years after their previous studio album. Following the release of the album, the group embarked on a world tour during which this concert was filmed in Japan. Many of the tracks from the We Live Here album are included along with others from various ’80s albums.

In addition to Metheny, Mays and Rodby, the full lineup for this show boasted the talents of Paul Wertico (drums), David Blamires (vocal, various instruments), Mark Ledford (vocals, various instruments) and Armando Marcal (percussion). Included in the DVD are short interview segments with the band members inserted between some of the songs which give an insight into the creation of the album and life on the tour.

One Response to “Pat Metheny, Live From Japan”

Saw PMG on this tour in Sacramento on a very hot day. It was a strange venue for PMG…it was an outdoor show at the Radisson Hotel…much of the crowd was interested for the hip-hop influences found on “We Live Here” and danced around for those songs. But when things got more challenging musically, those fans lost interest quickly. I wonder if that’s why Pat hasn’t played Sacramento since. He has played at Mondavi a few times and I’ve been privileged to attend those shows.
This band was one of the best I’ve seen of the PMG. Wertico remains my favorite drummer of all time. Lyle Mays is one of my favorite musicians of all time and we haven’t even discussed the incredible fretwork of Mr. Metheny or his songwriting skills that are often lost in the great records he makes. Absolute genius…
