On November 13, Paul McCartney fans will have their first opportunity to purchase Live Kisses—intimate concert footage of the former Beatle performing most of the standards and one of the two originals that appeared earlier this year on his lovely studio release Kisses on the Bottom—on DVD, Blu-Ray and/or digital video. In addition to the concert, the Live Kisses package includes promo videos directed by McCartney, behind-the-scenes interviews and a 40-page hardcover book featuring an extensive collection of photographs.
The concert footage was shot on the evening of February 9 at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, where much of Kisses on the Bottom was recorded. Earlier that day, McCartney was presented with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Exactly 48 years had passed since The Beatles made their U.S. television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. In the Capitol Records Building that night, McCartney was reunited with many of the musicians who accompanied him on Kisses on the Bottom: pianist and musical director Diana Krall, bassist John Clayton, drummer Karriem Riggins, guitarists John Pizzarelli and Anthony Wilson, vibraphonist Mike Mainieri and conductor Alan Broadbent. Producer Tommy LiPuma and recording engineer Al Schmitt—both key players during the Kisses on the Bottom sessions—were also on-hand. Standing behind the same microphone that has captured some of the most iconic voices in history, McCartney led his bandmates through a collection of standards he grew up listening to during his childhood, and also though his own composition “My Valentine.” Special guests included Abe Laboriel Jr. (from McCartney’s touring band) on backing vocals, and Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, who performed the solo on “My Valentine” originally recorded by Eric Clapton for the studio album.
Bonus Live Kisses material includes six versions of the “My Valentine” music video, directed by McCartney and starring Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman, as well as a “Making My Valentine” film. There are also two short films with behind-the-scenes footage filmed at the Mary McCartney album photoshoot for Kisses on the Bottom. The final extra is an interview with Paul and producer Tommy LiPuma talking about the conception and creation of the studio album.
