In late 1930, the cornet of Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke proclaimed in song, “I’ll Be a Friend with Pleasure.” Now, 80 years later, from July 22-25 in Davenport, Iowa, that friendship will be renewed once again during the 39th annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival.
This year’s festival in Beiderbecke’s hometown alongside the Mississippi River will take place in various Davenport venues and include more bands than ever. As usual, this year’s edition will celebrate Beiderbecke’s life and musical contributions to jazz.
Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jazz Band will be the featured band during a ceremony (and during other performances) at Beiderbecke’s gravesite at Oakdale Memorial Gardens on Saturday at 10 a.m. Other scheduled performers include the Ballyhoo Foxtrot Orchestra, a vintage ensemble dedicated to early jazz music, and the Buffalo Ridge Jazz Band, which plays classic traditional jazz. The Firecracker Jazz Band will pay homage to the roots of jazz in Dixieland and New Orleans. Cynthia Sayer, an internationally known jazz banjoist and 10-plus-year veteran of Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band, will be joined on the bandstand by traditional jazz trumpeter Randy Sandke and trombonist John Allred.
At 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, Andy Schumm & His Gang will perform at Davenport’s Putnam Museum. During this concert, Bix’s trumpet and family piano will be played. Just 24 years old, Schumm formed the group in 2009 for the Bix Festival in Racine, Wisconsin.
Vince Giordano of the Nighthawks has put together an 11-piece ensemble that will perform on Saturday night at the Col Ballroom, a venue where Bix himself once played. Giordano’s band includes David Boeddinghaus on piano and Andy Stein on violin.
Besides the music, the schedule includes educational seminars, musician clinics, tours of the Beiderbecke family home, the Sunday liturgy at First Presbyterian Church and the memorable graveside service at Bix’s final resting place in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.
Tickets are available now for a variety of packages which allow admission to all weekend activities or single concert sessions.
