Miles and Sonny: The Early Years

milesdaily2From January 1951 to March 1956, trumpeter Miles Davis and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins played together on five recording dates for the Prestige label. Historically speaking, these were important, formative sessions, especially the ones in the early ’50, when both artists were busy assimilating the fundamental elements of bebop and developing their own voices on their instruments. On the forthcoming 25-track, two-disc set Miles Davis & Sonny Rollins: The Classic Prestige Sessions, 1951-1956 (Concord Music Group), we can chart their progress on both fronts. In addition to Davis and Rollins, the sessions also feature performances by Art Blakey, Tommy Flanagan, Roy Haynes, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver and several other talented session players who went on to establish prolific and influential careers of their own in subsequent years.

The compilation, which includes liner notes from jazz historian and journalist Ira Gitler, is set for an August 4 release. Here are the track listings:
