Tides of Yesterday (Savant Records), the second collaborative recording by vocalist Carolyn Leonhart and tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, combines Leonharts expressive, sensuous voice with Escofferys sonorous, soaring sax. Its a singular achievement to so thoroughly integrate a vocalist into a group that it all seems part of a whole. Leonhart often uses her voice as another instrument in the group, adding another element and a depth to the songs. Containing originals as well as music by Charles Mingus, Lee Morgan, and Donald Fagen, Tides of Yesterday features their working band (Toru Dodo on piano, Hans Glawischnig on bass, and Donald Edwards on drums) and guest appearances by Adam Rogers on guitar and Jeff Haynes on percussion
