Boston’s Great Day of Jazz
Date: 28 Sep 2013
Time: 00:00 - 18:00
Location: Columbus Ave, Boston
The 13th annual edition of The Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival, Boston’s biggest block party — drawing some 80,000 attendees in the past — returns on Saturday, September 28, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The free outdoor festival takes place on Columbus Avenue in Boston’s South End, and features three stages of live performances by over 15 artists.
Highlights include acclaimed 10-time Grammy nominated neo-soul singer Meshell Ndegeocello; the Will Calhoun Trio, led by the Grammy Award-winning drummer of the band Living Colour (Calhoun is pictured above); and Robin McKelle & the Flytones, whose new album, Soul Flower, is out now on Doxie/Sony records.
Supported by an NEA Art Works grant, the theme of this year’s festival is Jazz: The Next Generation, and features performances by acclaimed up-and-coming artists, such as trumpeter Christian Scott, the Mike Tucker Trio featuring vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and the Matt Savage Quartet featuring sax great Bobby Watson. Student and faculty performers include Lawrence “Larry” Watson & the Workforce, Matt Jenson & the Liquid Revolution, the Berklee Global Jazz Ambassadors featuring Adam Cruz, the Berklee P-Funk Ensemble directed by Lenny Stallworth, and street performers Marcus Santos and Bloco AfroBrazil. The outdoor celebration also features a variety of vendor booths offering food and crafts from all over the world.
