The Hollywood Bowl is set to kick off it “Jazz at the Bowl” concert series on July 9 with The Count Basie Orchestra and several guests celebrating the music of Ella Fitzgerald. The series will proceed until the final concert, on September 3, which will feature ace bassist Marcus Miller and producer/director Reginald Hudlin exploring music and movies. Performances are staged every Wednesday night—except for July 30—at 8 p.m.

In addition to the performers already mentioned, the “Jazz at the Bowl” series will welcome Boz Scaggs, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, John Legend and a lot more great talent. Here’s the full schedule:


To Ella With Love

The Count Basie Orchestra, with special guests Patti Austin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Clint Holmes, Yuna, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Carment Bradford.

The evening salutes Fitzgerald’s swinging scat and timeless classics with the Basie Orchestra and special guest vocalists. L.A.’s own Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra kicks off the evening.


Boz Scaggs; Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin; and Eliane Elias. 

Blue-eyed soulster Boz Scaggs headlines with his hits and smooth rhythm-and-blues from his latest release. Ritenour and Grusin bring their flawless technique and cool refinement to the precedings after opening act Eliane Elias (pictured above) opens the show with her captivating fusion of Bill Evans-influenced jazz and Brazilian grooves.


Americas & Americans Festival

Gilberto Santa Rosa; Sheila E.

“El Caballero de la Salsa,” one of the most prominent salsa performers, returns to the Bowl. Santa Rosa’s pioneering music ranges from salsa romantic to ritmo tropical, improvisation to bolero. Sensational star percussionist Sheila E. heats up the night with her feisty Latin rhythms and effervescent pop.


Herbie Hancock with Orchestra and conductor Vince Mendoza; Gregory Porter; Robert Glasper Experiment

Led by Mendoza, Hancock’s compositions take on new life, to sweeping effect, with the addition of orchestral arrangements. Acclaimed new jazz singer Porter adds warmth and old-school sound with his own set. Glasper and his unique jazz hip-hop sound open the evening.


Get on Up: A James Brown Celebration 

Christian McBride, musical director, with special guests Aloe Blacc, D’Angelo, Angélique Kidjo, Bettye Lavette and others.

A high-energy celebration of “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business,” with passionate James Brown expert Christian McBride presiding over the evening.


Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” 

John Legend and the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Nine-time Grammy-winner John Legend recreates Marvin Gaye’s classic homage to America and the civil rights movement—What’s Going On—in its entirety, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Opening up the evening, Legend and funk-soul star Sharon Jones duet in famed Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell hits.


Frampton’s Guitar Circus 

Peter Frampton, Buddy Guy and special guests Randy Bachman, David Hidalgo and Robert Randolph

A night of guitar-hero pyrotechnics and gutsy blues featuring Frampton, Guy and their talented guests.


The Academy Celebrates The Black Movie Soundtrack
Marcus Miller with conductor Vince Mendoza, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Anthony Hamilton and additional guests.

Grammy-winning musician Miller teams up with award-winning producer/director Reginald Hudlin for a soulful celebration of music and movies, with clips on the Bowl’s big screen. From Stormy Weather and Superfly to Purple Rain and Waiting to Exhale, the performance will be marked by a wide array of guest appearances.
